Why Do We Overeat?

It happens every year. People are making resolutions, plans to get healthy, and lose weight. Though it seems like a fresh start, for many it is starting again. Maybe you said last year you would get healthy. Maybe you said that last Monday?


We can finally and truly make a fresh start (for the last time) when we get to the root of why we remain in this endless cycle.

There are four basic needs that all human beings are instinctively motivated to satisfy throughout their lives.

1. Acceptance - Knowing that you are loved and needed by others. 2. Identity - Knowing that you are individually significant and special. 3. Security - Knowing that you are well protected and provided for. 4. Purpose - Knowing that you have a reason for living.

These are deep needs, not wants.


Whether you realize it or not, these needs motivate the decisions you make. All of us are driven in some way to find a way to satisfy these needs. There is a strong emotional pull to have these needs met.

Here is a list of the common ways people seek to have their deepest needs met. These will be in a different order for every person.

1. Yourself 2. Spouse 3. Friends 4. Children 5. Work, Job, or Careers 6. Food 7. Alcohol, drugs 8. Social Media 9. Money, material possessions 10. Gaming

Etc., the list could go on and on.

People overeat because they are trying to get one or more of their basic needs met.

However, the only person who can meet all of our needs is Jesus.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

When one or more of these needs are not being met, you will find something to fill it. And so...

  • When you don't feel accepted, you eat.

  • When you don't know who you are, you eat.

  • When you feel insecure, you eat.

  • When you don't feel like your life has a purpose, you eat.

And the worse part is when you overeat, become overweight, your health declines, and things get worse and not better.

So how can you stop overeating? Let Jesus fill you. Then you will stop looking to food.

Fasting and prayer help you break the cycle of overeating AND seek God and let Him fill you.

1. God always accepts you.

Isaiah 43:1 God says, "Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine."

2. Our identity is in Christ.

I am a child of God, and I am the righteousness of God in Christ. My identity is in HIm.

3. He is my security.

Psalm 23. The Lord is my Shephard. I shall not want.

4. God gives me my purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11. For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you a hope and a future.

The more you let God meet all of your needs, the more you will be able to stop trying to meet your needs through food.
