What Does It Matter?

I had the privilege of preaching on Philippians 1 as we kicked off a new series at C3 Church (Thanks Matt!). You can click here to watch or listen to the sermon.

When I started working on the sermon, I knew I was going to speak on joy since that is what the book of Philippians is about - How to Have Joy No Matter What.

But I was not expecting God to do what He did. After I finished writing my sermon, I sent it to the staff that needed it to get ready for Sunday and I was ready to relax.

On my day off, I decided to casually read through Philippians 1 again, and verses 15-18 jumped out at me.

And one phrase in particular:

"It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. But WHAT DOES IT MATTER? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this, I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice."

I couldn’t believe what I read…….What does it matter?

People in leadership were doing things for the wrong reasons and with a wrong heart and all Paul could say was WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • Wasn’t he going to get on Facebook and rant about all the wrong things the other churches were doing?

  • Wasn’t he going to call church leaders from Philippi to come to the prison and get this taken care of?

  • Wasn’t he going sit in the prison and stew on all the wrong things going on in churches?

  • Wasn’t he going to debate with other Christians about if these leaders were really leaders?

He didn’t do any of these things. He wasn’t going to let anything steal his joy. He was just thankful that Christ was being preached, even if it was with wrong attitudes.

He knew God was big enough to handle the wrong attitudes. It wasn’t about him, so he just chose to rejoice.

This phrase has become my motto - WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • If I come home and the kitchen is a mess - WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • When people don’t do what I want - WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • If people don’t like me -WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • When people don’t ask for my opinion - WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • If I’m not asked to speak at an event -WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

  • In light of eternity, WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

Life is short and eternity is long. I’m not going to let situations steal my joy. God is big enough to handle it.

Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit which helps us to live in victory and not allow satan to steal, kill or destroy my joy.

Let me encourage you to take some time and ask God what is your “What does it matter” situation that you are going through.
