Water Challenge

I have been on a journey of health for a long time, but we all know that health is, in fact, a journey, not a sprint. We take small steps along the way to make a big impact!

One of those steps is simply to drink more water!

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog on the benefits of drinking water. You can read it here!

As we are doing our 21 Days of Prayer, I was motivated to do a 7-day water drinking challenge! I wanted us all to be making healthy steps together. I am tired of isolation. You can still join in! Check out the FB Live I did to get started!

One reason that I am so passionate about the challenge is that people are asking me about how I do it all of the time!

The why behind the what:

1. Water balances your body.

Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of water in your body include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism.

2. Water can help control calories.

Drinking lots of water can be a weight-loss strategy. While water doesn't have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for high-calorie drinks can help, and it also makes you feel full!

3. Water helps energize muscles.

Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, resulting in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don't have enough fluid, they don't work as well, so drinking enough liquids is important when exercising.

4. Water helps keep skin looking good.

Your skin contains plenty of water and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, so drink up!

There are so many more reasons, but do I need to keep going? LOL!

I know that drinking water can be boring. Still, most nutritionists recommend people drink half their body weight in ounces per day because increasing water intake can boost your metabolism by as much as seven percent!

How can we make it easier to get our water each day?

1. Add fruit or essential oils.

Adding lemons, which are rich in vitamin C, is a great option! It helps prevent kidney stones, fights off colds and sore throats, cleanses your digestive tract, helps fight infections, and is a mood booster!

2. Drink from a straw.

You’re more likely to swallow more when you drink from a straw than when you sip directly from a bottle and make it more accessible.

3. Measure it ahead of time.

If a large bottle is overwhelming or annoying to carry around with you, break up your intake into smaller water bottles to make it more manageable. I talk about setting a vision or goal in this FB Live.

4. Use a tracking app or water bottle.

There are so many water tracking apps out there that help like this. Or how about a water bottle that encourages you like this!

Whether you use all of the tips and tricks above or simply drink your plain water, let’s do this!

Once you complete this challenge, you can start another 7-day challenge and then another! Before you know it, it will be a healthy habit that you automatically do each day!
