21 Days Without Food

Every January, we do 21 Days of Prayer of Fasting. This time, I didn't do the Daniel's Fast, I did a water-only fast. Now, to be totally honest, I did have superfood greens, bone broth, and herbal teas. Other than those things, it was water.

Some of you may be saying..." biblically, are you supposed to be telling us?"

I am not telling you to brag, I am sharing with you like others have done for me, to let you know this is possible and you can do more than you think you can.

This was Prayer and Fasting. If you just fast there are some benefits, but prayer and fasting are for spiritual reasons.

What surprised me.

In the first week, I had unbelievable energy. I was up early and going strong all day. My Church, C3Church.com, met every morning for prayer during the 21 days.

The second week, my energy dropped a little and I felt more of the detox happening. I know that as your body detoxes, it also detoxes emotionally. So as things came up in my spirit that brought up negative emotions, I would write about it and then burn the letter, and then I would write out things I was thankful for. This is a practice I do often to keep from harboring bitter or negative emotions.

It keeps me giving all my cares and hurts and offenses to God and then staying in a place of thanksgiving.

By the end of the second week, I began to feel like it was easy and I might even be sad when the fast was over. I was praying every morning with my church family and spending time reading the Bible and other great books.

However, during the start of the third week, I was ready for it to be over. LOL!

In the last week, my energy was lower and even though I was functioning, it was at a slower pace. I did rest more and take more breaks. But this also allowed me to read and pray more and to just slow down.

At times, people close to me would ask if I wanted food or at least a smoothie or something. I laughed and told them... "I made it this far, I am NOT stopping".

I did drop weight, but that was not a goal.

The goal was to rid my body of toxins so that my senses would be heightened and I would have more of a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

What was the most difficult part?

The smells of food.

When you fast, your senses are heightened, so with having water only, they were super heightened.

Our kids invited us to go to a hockey game and, of course, we said yes. As we were walking to the PNC Arena, the smell of brisket was so strong. I had a moment of weakness, and I instantly prayed, God you are going to have to help me.

He did. I got in, got my water, and had such a fun time talking with friends, family and cheering for the game.

Life is more than food. Spending time with people is important.

Even when people around me were eating, I just drank my water and enjoyed talking with people.

One tip about doing a water-only fast is that you shouldn't go back to solid food right away. So I started with a couple of days of liquids like juices, soups, and smoothies and then a few days of vegetables and now slowly adding more foods.

Will I do it again? Yes! It was such a great experience. Next time, I want to be able to help other people do it. :)

I love stretching and challenging myself and doing more than I thought I could do.

So are you in? Will you join me next January? :)
