Wants Vs. Needs

Apr 16, 2021

Do you know the difference between a want and need?

Want is defined as having a strong desire for.

Need is defined as to be needful or necessary.

So in your life, what is it that you need and what is it that you want?

Believe it or not, there is a correct order to want and need in your life, and if you get right, your life will change for the better.

If you live with the reality that you need God, and you have to have Him, everything else will fall into place.

Luke 10:27 (NIV) He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

He didn’t say love the Lord your God with part of your heart, soul, strength, and mind. Jesus said ALL.

When God is first place, and He has our ALL, then we can live in the truth of what He says about us and our lives.

We won’t need things from people.  We can want something but not need it, and when I don’t get what I want from people, I am ok.

For example, God never rejects me. When people reject me, I am ok because it is a want, not a need.  I want people to accept me, but I don’t need them to because Jesus has already fulfilled that need.

When I walk into a room, I don’t need to be noticed, talked to by certain people, or acknowledged because I have all I need from God.  I may want it, but I can put my wants aside because my needs are met.

In relationships, if you begin by needing something from somebody, you will more than likely be let down.

Here is something to think about! I don’t need Matt to love me. I am loved by God completely. I want Matt to love me, but when marriage is difficult, I can stay committed because God is meeting my needs, not Matt. (And vice versa.)

When we don’t need anything but God, we are not easily offended.  We can walk into a room and look to see who could use some encouragement.  We can take our eyes off of ourselves and think of others because we are not looking for others to meet our needs.

Say this out loud.

I want to be loved.

I want to be accepted.

I want to be liked.

I want to be chosen.

I want to be encouraged.

I want to be noticed.

I want to have purpose.

I want to be _______________________.  (you fill in the blank)

Jesus meets all of these needs, even all the ones you can put in the blank.

I want to be loved ~ But if you don’t love me, I’m ok; God loves me, and He meets that need.

1 Corinthians tells us how God loves us.  Nobody else will ever love you this perfectly.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NLT) Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

I want to be accepted ~ But if you reject me, I’m ok.  I am still wanted by God.

Isaiah 43:1-5 tells me: God loves me, He created me, He calls me by name, I am His, He formed me, He redeemed me and I am precious in His sight.

I want to be liked ~ But if you don’t like me, I am ok because God created me just as He liked.

Psalm 139:13 (NLT) You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. 15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,  as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born.

I want to be chosen ~ But if you don’t choose me, I’m ok because God does.

1 Peter 2:9 (NLT) for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

I want to be encouraged ~ But if you don’t encourage me, God and His Words are always encouraging to me.

Isaiah 43:2 (NIV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

I want to be noticed ~ But if you overlook me, I’m ok, because God always sees me, and He knows where I am at all times.

Jeremiah 12:3 (NLT)  But as for me, Lord, you know my heart. You see me and test my thoughts.

John 10:14 (NLT) “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,

I want to have purpose ~ But even when I feel a little lost, God created me with purpose, and I have all the purpose I need.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Psalm 139 (NLT) tells us how much God loves us and is for us.  I would encourage you to memorize this whole chapter.

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5 You go before me and follow me.  You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!  7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;  if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—12  but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. 13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.  15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.  They cannot be numbered!  18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!  And when I wake up,  you are still with me!  19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers!  20  They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name.  21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you?  Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?  22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred for your enemies are my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you,  and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

How I Need You is a great song to include in your prayers to God.   Here are the lyrics!

[Verse 1]

Every day in Your hands

You were there before time began

Sovereign One, I rest in Your plan

From the depths to the dawn

You are there, Your promise is strong

I will trust with all that I am

[Chorus]

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You stay the same, You are good in Your ways

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You are enough, all my trust is in You, Lord

[Verse 2]

You fashioned me, formed my heart

Searched my soul, and know every thought

Love so great, but never too far

Through the storm, You're the calm

Every war, You’ve already won

Life secure in Your loving arms

[Chorus]

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You stay the same, You are good in Your ways

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You are enough, all my trust is in You, Lord

[Bridge]

You are powerful, God above it all

I believe in You, I believe in You

You do miracles, the impossible

I believe in You, I believe in You

You are powerful, God above it all

I believe in You, I believe in You

You do miracles, the impossible

I believe in You, I believe in You

You are powerful, God above it all

I believe in You, I believe in You

You do miracles, the impossible

I believe in You

[Chorus]

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You stay the same, You are good in Your ways

Jesus, Jesus, oh, how I need You

You are enough, and all my trust is in You, Lord
