Test Your Words - How Did You Score?

Which of these phrases sounds more like you? There are two phrases with each number. I want you to print this off and highlight or circle the phrase that most sounds like you.
- Remember that I’ll be praying for you today. Or, hope you have a good day.
- I love spending time with you. Or, how long is this going to take?
- I really want to hear what you have to say. Or, are you through talking, I have something to say.
- Jesus loves you and so do I. Or you say nothing, you hardly ever, if ever, say I love you.
- You’re such a problem solver! Or, here let me do that, you're not doing it right.
- I’m proud of you and who you’re becoming. Or, you can't do anything right.
- You are God’s workmanship. Or, you are a mistake.
- Our family wouldn’t be the same without you. Or, you are the Blacksheep of the family.
- You inspire me in so many ways. Or, you don't motivate me, I have to do things myself.
- You’re brave; so go ahead and try something new today. Or, you are doing what?

- I’m your biggest fan! Or, I don't have time for that (or you) right now.

- You’ve got exactly what it takes to be a leader. Or, I don't know if you have what it takes to be a leader.

- I like the way you think! Or, You think so differently, it's weird.
- I had a bad day too; tomorrow will be better. Or, bad days always seem to follow you.

If you are like me, when I really looked at these phrases, I realized that I have probably said more of the second sentence than the first. Yikes!
I saw this quote last week and it got me to thinking about words that I speak.
"Praise others. It will bring them peace of mind. Do not expect others to praise you. It will bring you peace of mind.
The Bible teaches us to treat others like we want to be treated. Do I want to be praised? Then I should praise others. If I do not want others to have expectations of me, then I should not have expectations of others.
What would it take for us to speak the first set of words in the test? What would it take for us to praise and encourage others?
Think about this...if I have a word of praise or encouragement and I keep it to myself, then it is wasted.
It's like food that was left out and went bad, you have to just throw it away. It could have been really good for lunch, but it went bad.
Let's not allow words of praise and encouragement to go sour inside of us. Let's get them out and see how they feed people's souls.
Let's speak life, expecting nothing in return.
Here are some practical ways we can be intentional to speak words of praise and encouragement, especially if these are new words and phrases for you.
1. Do it awkward. If you are like me and your words sound more like the second sentence in the test, to start speaking life-giving words is going to feel awkward, strange, unnatural, etc. So we are going to have to push through and do it anyway. You can do it, I know you can!!
2. Do it afraid. You cannot be a people pleaser and change. If you have been more negative with your words and you start speaking positive, life-giving words people may question you. They may also make sarcastic comments and not trust what you are saying.......at first.
But the more you do it, the more they will accept it. As you are willing to change and work on yourself, they will begin to accept the new you. Trust me; they will lean in, waiting for you to speak life over them.
3. Put the phrases in your calendar/reminders. Take some time to put the first phrases on the test in your calendar or reminders then every time one pops up, either send a text or say it to whoever you are with. If your words have been more negative, then you may just text the phrases for a couple of months, but the more you read them and text them, you will want to say them.
I would encourage you to start with 2 to 3 phrases per day and build up. So in your calendar reminders, pick different phrases to say or text throughout the day.
