How To Teach Your Kids To Not Be Materialistic

Oct 24, 2018

Have you ever seen the kid who doesn't get what they want at the store and they throw a full-blown temper tantrum?

With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, we all want kids who are thankful and not materialistic but is that even possible?   Yes, it is!

There was a scientific study done that you can read about here called How to Avoid Raising a Materialistic Child.

What's interesting is the Bible has been teaching how to avoid raising a materialistic child for thousands of years.

What has the Bible been teaching and what did the scientific study show?   Gratitude will keep your child from being materialistic.  As adults, thankfulness changes us too!

"Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus."1 Thessalonians 5:18

"And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20

"And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father."Colossians 3:17

"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!" Psalm 100:4

So how are some ways to get your kids to start being grateful?

1.  Start a gratitude journal. Buy a journal and every day write 10 to 20 things you are thankful for. It's amazing to watch the numbers grow from 100, 500, 1000 and more.

2.  At breakfast or the dinner table have everybody go around and share 3 things they are thankful for.

3.  Teach your kids to write out any negative emotions they are feeling and then burn it, teaching them to cast all their cares on the Lord, because He cares about what we are feeling.  Then have them write out 10 things they are thankful for.

The story of the 10 lepers says they were all healed, but only one came back and gave thanks and he was made whole.

We want our kids living their best life not living a life of entitlement and selfishness.  So as parents, you have to model for your kids how to live a life of gratitude, and if you do that the atmosphere in your house will start to be whole; emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Thankful for you guys,

Martha

PS- share with us three things you are thankful for.
