Don't Lose Your Joy

Apr 17, 2020

Do you feel like life is never going to get back to normal?

I know it won't go back to exactly like it was before because we can't go back and undo COVID-19.   However, I am ready to see friends and be able to go places. I'm ready to go to church again and meet people in person for a coffee.  I'm ready for family get-togethers and trips to the mall.  You get the picture!

In the Bible, there is a prophet Habakkuk who was complaining and questioning God because He was allowing the Babylonian army to take over God's people.   Things were changing and chaotic.

Habakkuk doesn't like how things are going, but in the end, he affirms that even though life is hard and getting harder - he will choose to rejoice in the Lord.

This verse is Habakkuk's prayer and reminds me that even when life doesn't go my way, I can choose to keep my joy. No person or situation can take that from me.

Habakkuk 3:17-19

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms,

and there are no grapes on the vines;

even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren;

even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty,

YET,  I will REJOICE in the Lord.

I will be JOYFUL in the God of my salvation!

the Sovereign Lord is my strength!

He makes me as surefooted as a deer, and able to tread upon the heights.

If I could update the wording for 2020, it would go something like this:

Even though buildings are empty and have no people,

and there is no toilet paper in the stores;

Even though the churches aren't meeting, the schools lie empty and barren;

Even though restaurants are take out only and stores have less food,

Yet, I will REJOICE in the Lord.

I will be JOYFUL in the God of my salvation!

the Sovereign Lord is my strength!

He makes me as sure-footed as a deer, and able to tread upon the heights.

Now take this verse, make it personal and fill in the blanks...

Even though the _________________________have no _______________________,

and there are no _________________________;

even though the _________________________, and the ______________________ lie empty and barren;

even though the _____________________, and the _______________________ are empty,

YET,  I will REJOICE in the Lord.

I will be JOYFUL in the God of my salvation!

the Sovereign Lord is my strength!

He makes me as surefooted as a deer, and able to tread upon the heights.

Even if everything is going wrong we can still rejoice in who God is and what He has done for us.

Praise Him that He is my strength!

He is my provider,

He is my sustainer,

He is my salvation,

He loves me and is for me,

His hand of blessing is on my head,

And His favor surrounds me like a shield.

And so much more!

Let me encourage you to focus on God and who He is.  Rejoice in Him and what He has done and can do.

It's our choice!

We can focus on all of the chaos around us, how life has changed and what we can't do.

OR, we can focus on who God is, His goodness and how He can use us during difficult times. He will then give us the strength we need and He will make us surefooted.
