This Sunday, we celebrate all the dads in our lives! I'm so grateful for the two amazing men in my life who I get to celebrate. My dad, Ted Wilbanks, and of course, Matt Fry, the father of my children.
Celebrating our dads is great on Father’s Day. In fact, it’s great to show honor to them every day! But for some people, this is really difficult. For many, their dads weren’t there for them. Or maybe their dad was the one who primarily hurt them. I understand that.
However, we can all be thankful for something when it comes to our dads. Even if it’s simply that they had a part in our creation.
Thankfully, we can all celebrate that we have a God who is our perfect Heavenly Father. He loves us unconditionally and he is always pursuing us. He is even able to stand in the gap when our earthly fathers disappoint us.
Our earthly fathers were born sinners, just like us! They’re not perfect. They were most likely hurt themselves, and hurting people hurt people. So when they hurt you, they didn’t even realize the pain they were causing.
We have to forgive our earthly fathers and trust our Heavenly Father. Often we get this backward. We want our earthly fathers to be perfect, love us unconditionally, and always be there for us. Yet in reality, they’re not going to be able to hit the mark. As hard as they may try, they can’t be perfect. In fact, none of us can.
Instead of accepting God’s love, we blame him for our problems and harbor anger towards Him in our hearts. But what we’re called to do is love and trust Him. He loves us unconditionally, He’s always there for us, and will never leave us or forsake us. He is good and everything He does is good. “We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28).
When we have this revelation, we can forgive our earthly fathers for how they hurt us, and we can choose to love them and pray for them.
So this Father’s Day let’s be thankful! Take some time to write down things you are thankful for, and this year put your dad on the list.
